Bridging Away From Austin

"Austin is an up and coming city." In the year and a half I have lived here, I am certain I hear this sentence at least once a week. Being from the Bay Area, I moved to Texas to get away from the lack of community, obsession with technology, and desire to succeed at all costs, only to learn that Austin is "trying to be the new Silicon Valley". Historically Austin has always been known for having an eccentric charm. With this vinyl print (which I photoshopped in a mock-up), I used one of Austin's staple attractions--the bats flying away from South Congress Bridge--to represent the changes in the city. If the viewer looks at the right side of the bridge, they will notice an outlet with a cord which most of the bats flying away are connected to. This tying down, symbolizes the parallel constriction the influx of tech companies and outsiders moving to Texas has evidently caused. The few unattached bats represent the Austin natives, determined to not succumb and preserve the original charm

Global Warming Exists .

Last Fall, California experiences some of our worst wildfires to date, and unfortunately many of my friends and family back home had to deal with the resulting deteriorating air quality. It was especially upsetting to hear politicians during this period of time deny the concept of global warming; leaving the millions of Californians dealing with the direct effects of global warming unaddressed. In this presentation, I wanted to use 12 chromatic strategies to represent 12 different natural disasters that occur in the U.S. By applying the uncommonly known strategies to a pressing current issue, I intended to not only educate those around me on this foreign topic I enjoyed learning about, but apply it to bring attention to global warming. Using Photoshop, I recolored pictures I found online to fit the definitions of each respective strategy and then curated each of the images into an intended poster, meant to serve as representation of what will happen if we don't take action soon.

A Ring Isn’t Justification

During the first week of last semester, the entire freshman class was required to complete both AlcoholEdu and Sexual Assault Awareness Modules. While I was looking through the latter of the modules, I noticed there were significant differences between Texas laws regarding sexual assault and those in California. Something that stood out to me was how there are no laws in Texas supporting victims who have been sexual assaulted by their spouse. In fact, many laws work against marital sexual assault, explicitly exempting certain behaviors for legally married couples considered assault in other relationships or scenarios. This really upset me and I want to bring attention to it. Using Illustrator I made this poster: the rings outlining the male and female sex symbols represent the concept of matrimony and blue bleeding into the pink in the female symbol alludes to unconsensual action taken by one spouse onto the other. To insure viewers would be drawn in, I wrote the message boldly in red.
